Abstract
The amplfying properties of silcate—neodymium-glass fiber quantum amplifiers are investigated. The propagation features of laser emission in multimode light guides are studied. The important role played by short-lived color centers (SCC) in the amplification process is demonstrated. Stimulated decay of SCC by absorption of neodymium radiation, which leads to an abrupt increase of the gain of the glass fiber amplifier and to a substantial shortening of the duration of the amplified giant pulses, is observed.
