Abstract
A dye ring-laser spectrometer is described, which is frequency-stabilized to a cavity. The potential short-term stability is on the Hz level. This is proved by analyzing the Allan standard deviation and the spectral density of the error signal used for stabilization. Precision frequency tuning is achieved by electrooptic generation of a single sideband to the laser frequency which is used for the stabilization, and by varying the modulation frequency. Thus, continuous tunability is achieved across a 3 GHz frequency span, at a about 1 Hz laser stability relative to the cavity, for time periods between 10−5 and 1 s.
