Summary
A modification of Cajal's astrocyte stain was developed and carefully standardized, specially for material with prolonged formalin fixation.
The modification consists of changes in the composition of the staining solution and procedure: Chloroauric acid is used instead of the brown gold chloride recommended byCajal. Prolonged washing in running water is performed to reverse the combination of astrocyte proteins with formaldehyde and to remove fixation acidic prodcuts which may interfere with the staining reaction.
