Summary
The solid state and the properties of polymers are influenced by the chemical structure and moreover by the arrangement of the molecules. Consequently the characterization of the solid state of polymers requires special methods which usually are not applied to the characterization of low molecular substances. Mechanical and dielectric methods and spectroscopic investigations complement the results of measurements of the specific volume and the specific heat as well as statements which are based on direct microscopic observations. As it is to be learnt from many examples, only the combination of these methods can give a reliable and complete picture of the solid state of polymers.
