Summary
Neither the selectivity as described by the determinant of the calibration matrix nor the condition number alone as a measure of error propagation are reliable criteria for defining rational measurement strategies. A simple and flexible combined criterion which includes the condition number and the most important sources of photometric errors is developed and shown to give better protection against odd results. Application of the modified simplex method leads to a precisely determined set of wavelength positions which is equivalent to different overdetermined systems. However, the available criteria fail for the optimization of overdetermined sets. Applications for photometric methods with aquo-, PAR-, and DDTC-complexes are given.
