Summary
A chronological survey of the development of the vitreous, the hyaloidal and retinal vessels and the zonule of the rabbit and of the mouse is presented. In the rabbit the primary vitreous develops from the 11th to 26th day of gestation. The onset of the development of the secondary vitreous is around the 21st to 22nd day of pregnancy. Regressive changes in the hyaloidal vessels start approximately at birth, they are followed by similar changes in the posterior part, later in the aequatorial and then in the anterior part of the vascular tunic of the lens. The hyaloid artery obliterates completely around the 13th to 18th day after birth from distal toward proximal. In the rabbit the retinal vessels originate from backward turning branches of the hyaloid artery. Their development starts on the 23rd to 24th day of pregnancy.
In the mouse retinal vessels are already present at birth (21st day of pregnancy). The development of the secondary vitreous starts not earlier than the 4th day of life. Also the zonule appears relatively late and is definitely present on the 11th day. The primary vitreous is completely resolved on the 30th day of life.
