Summary
The activity of Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and of Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in the cortex of clear and opaque human lenses has been determined by means of the UV-method. The mean values of enzyme activities in the cortex of clear lenses amounted to 25,5 BE3/mg of soluble protein (5290 BE/g wet weight) for GAPDH and to 23,2 BE/mg of soluble protein (4810 BE/g wet weight) for LDH, which means that these values were not considerably lower than the values reported for the liver. With an increase in the opacity of the cortex an increasing loss of enzyme activity has been observed, in mature cataracts only a quarter or a third of the enzyme activity found in clear cortex could be measured. Nuclear cataracts showed in their clear cortex merely a slight decrease of the activity of LDH compared to completely clear lenses.
