Summary
The enzymes, Glyeraldehydphosphatedehydrogenase (GAPDH) and Lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), were estimated in the aqueous humour and serum of persons suffering from senile cataract. It was observed that the absolute activity of GAPDH and LDH are much lower in the aqueous humour than those in the serum. The specific activity of both the enzymes, however, exceeds the value in the serum by a factor of more then 10. The ratio LDH/GAPDH in the aqueous humour (1.9) is lower than in the serum (3.08). These observations suggest that there does not exist a simple diffusion of these enzymes across the blood aqueous barrier. It is assumed that the lens could be additional source of these enzymes in the aqueous humour. Since in cases of intumescent cataract, the activity of aqueous humour enzymes is significantly higher than in cases of deep cortical cataracts, it is postulated that the enzymes from the lens probably leak out due to the destruction of superficial cortical fibres.
