Abstract
This article is placed within Contrastive Linguistics and it attempts to explore the relations between language and cognition, the way in which the retrospective mental process of ‘remembering’ is expressed by lexical units. For this purpose, a detailed analysis of the English and Spanish verbal predicates that belong to the core of this semantic domain is carried out from a functional and lexematic perspective at both syntagmatic and paradigmatic levels, including semantic, syntactic and functional information for each predicate. The study of this lexical dimension is made at both intralinguistic and interlinguistic levels and the final aim is to point out the main differences and similarities that are settled between both languages. The final section is devoted to study the syntactic pattern of the predicates analysed in order to show the strong relations between syntax and semantics.
