Summary
Where colitis ulcerosa has healed with conspicuous proliferation, a strong increase in nervous tissue is to be found. The changes in the ganglion cells of Meissner's Plexus can be classified as follows: a) degenerative processes that are marked by a lysis of the corpuscular components of the cell; b) productive processes in which hypertrophy and hyperplasia of the neurotubular cell components take place (cells with signs of an increased activity).
In the ganglion cells of Auerbach's Plexus occurs, besides the changes observed in the Meissner ganglion cells, a special form of degeneration which is characterised by a homogeneous thickening of the structure of the cytoplasma and the karyoplasma. In later stages of this form of degeneration the interstices of the endoplasmic reticulum expand to a maximum degree. The nuclear membrane dissolves and the cytoplasma and karyoplasma mingle. The nerve cells are subject to strong destructive processes.
The axons exhibit local swellings attaining a diameter many times more than that of the axon, the axon membranes break, and fragmentation of the nerve fibres (fibers) and neutrotubuli occurs. In colitis ulcerosa, peculiar nerve formations become observable that only with the aid of the electron microscope can be designated as “neurom” formations.
The investigations show a substantial agreement and complementation between microscopic and electronmicroscopic findings.
