This paper arises as part of a more ambitious program of work with Anna Szabolcsi. It began life as my draft of a paper to be published jointly with her, but has turned out to be rather more specialised in its concerns than we had anticipated, so that it now seems more appropriate to us that it should be published separately. Since our two quite distinct drafts of this earlier paper circulated under the title ‘Combinators, Categorial Grammar, and Parasitic Gaps’, I have slightly changed the title of the present paper in an attempt to avoid confusion with either draft. Nevertheless, the present paper remains directly influenced at a number of points by Anna's work and her comments on my unreasonably proliferating drafts, as I hope I have made clear in the text. It has also benefitted from comments over a long period by: Peter Buneman, Robin Cooper, Annabel Cormack, Kit Fine, Mark Gawron, Gerald Gazdar, Nick Haddock, Frank Heny, Jack Hoeksema, Polly Jacobson, Aravind Joshi, Einar Jowsey, Ewan Klein, David McCarty, Glyn Morrill, Dick Oehrle, Mats Rooth, Remo Pareschi, Ivan Sag, Mary Tait, Henry Thompson, Bonnie Lynn Webber, and the referees for NLLT. Some parts were presented at the Conference on Categorial Grammar at the University of Arizona, Tucson, June 1985 and the Conference on Modularity at the University of Massachusetts and Hampshire College, Amherst, June 1985, and I am grateful to the participants for their remarks and criticism. Parts of the research were supported by grants from ESPRIT (project 393) to CCS, University of Edinburgh, from the Cognitive Science Program at the University of Pennsylvania sponsored by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and from NSF grant IRI-10413 A02, ARO grant DAA6-29-84K-0061 and DARPA grant N0014-85-K0018 to CIS, University of Pennsylvania.
