Abstract
This chapter studies the origins and development of the curricular contexts that house the study of language and literature from ars liber to the current divisions into national traditions. It engages misunderstandings of the nature of traditional studies in grammar and philology and demonstrates that the original configuration of those studies differs radically from the misprisions currently surrounding them. They were initially conceived as panhumanistic sciences.
