Abstract
Businesses have spent billions of dollars on initiatives designed to assist them in dealing with an anticipated increase in the “diversity” of their workforces.1 When I began the research for my dissertation, I wanted to find out whether or not these corporate “diversity initiatives” had, or could have, any effect on the environment that kept the Lost Leaders from succeeding. This led to the title of my dissertation: “A Paradox of Diversity: Billions Invested, but Women Still Leave.”2 Unfortunately, the women’s interviews did not provide much insight into these programs. The fact that these former executives had very little to say about them, is evidence in itself that diversity initiatives in corporations have not had a tremendous impact.
