Abstract
This chapter discusses the evolving language and cultural policies in the Malaysian English language teaching (ELT) context. In particular, it analyses the cultural content in English textbooks used in secondary school classrooms in Malaysia to find out the extent to which they are meeting the current outlook on education which researchers believe should be shaped by the main social influence of the twenty-first century, namely, ‘glocalization’. The analysis reveals certain realities about the cultural content of the textbooks that have implications for English language teaching materials and methods in the Malaysian context and other similar second language contexts.
