Abstract
The Comoros islands were inhabited from at least the first century BC—they were home to East African mariners and Malagasy-speaking seafarers from maritime southeast Asia, who were also early colonizers of Madagascar. Permanent villages on the islands of Mohéli and Mayotte date from the 8th century, established by Arab seafarers who plied trade routes along the East African coast.
