Women, Politics, and Democracy in Latin America

Abstract

This chapter argues that women’s political participation in Colombia has progressively increased with the evolution of legal regulations and electoral results over the last ten years. It critically documents the response of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to the low levels of female participation in politics in Colombia—considering both achievements and obstacles. The main argument gives support to the important role of international actors in moving a gender agenda forward. The chapter describes UNDP’s three-pillar framework of advocacy, training and organization. The chapter concludes with a brief overview of the main lessons learned through the UNDP-led process to promote further inclusion of women in decision-making processes.
