Abstract

This epilogue aims to emphasize the significance of the chapters in this book that calls attention to the existence of various forms of linguistic diversity within the national societies of the three Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania), which were re-established politically as national states after the Soviet Union’s collapse. In fact, this epilogue highlights how national states, European ones especially, imagine and build themselves instead as monolingual in line with their typical political and cultural nature. A comparative analysis of Europe’s reality reveals, in fact, that its national states are very reluctant to acknowledge domestic linguistic diversity, thus often seek to eradicate or ignore actual domestic linguistic diversity also by resorting to repressive measures.
