Abstract
Gladys Maude Winifred Mitchell was born in Cowley, Oxfordshire. During her childhood, her family moved to London, and then to Hampshire. Her father, James Mitchell, was Scottish, inspiring his daughter’s later interest in his native country. He came from a poor family and had to work from an early age, so was determined that his children should benefit from a good education.
