Abstract
Best known as the creator of Raffles, a gentleman burglar in late Victorian London, Ernest William (‘Willie’) Hornung was born in Middleborough, the third son of John Peter Hornung, an Hungarian immigrant and Harriet (Armstrong) Hornung. He attended Uppingham School, developing a lifelong interest in cricket, but in 1883 he moved to Australia for the milder climate. Traces of his Australian experience appear in many of his writings but he stayed only two years before returning to England.
