Abstract
In this study, (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (C6H17NO3Si) and isatoic anhydride (C8H5NO3) reacted with hydroxysodalite nanoparticles (Na4Al3Si3O12(OH)) to produce a new composite with the purpose of effectively adsorbing Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The composite effectively removes Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions by chelating them via NH and NH2 groups and adsorbing them through ion exchange with Na(I) ions. Besides, the synthesized composite can be regenerated and reused multiple times, making this approach cost-effective and environmentally friendly because of its ability to eliminate pollutants that threaten the environment efficiently many times over. The presence of a broad XRD peak at 2Ɵ = 25° and irregular shapes in the SEM analysis confirmed successful modification of hydroxysodalite with (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane and isatoic anhydride. Additionally, the noticeable bands at 2850 and 3002 cm−1 in the FTIR spectrum confirmed this modification, corresponding to aliphatic and aromatic CH group stretching vibrations, respectively. Moreover, the adsorption of Cu(II) ions aligned well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir equilibrium isotherm. The composite showed an impressive maximum sorption capacity of 174.83 mg/g for Cu(II) ions. Furthermore, the ΔHo value of −45.06 kJ/mol confirms the exothermic nature of Cu(II) ion sorption using the composite, indicating a chemical process.
