Abstract

Ensuring food safety and quality is of utmost importance for public health and consumer trust. In recent years, blockchain technology (BCT) has been increasingly explored as a potential solution to revolutionise food safety management systems. This paper provides an inclusive overview of the role of BCT in ensuring safe and high-quality food products. Drawing on a review of relevant literature and a case study analysis, the paper evaluates the potential benefits and limitations of BCT in the food industry. The results show that blockchain-based food safety management systems offer several advantages, including increased transparency, traceability, and efficiency. However, there are also challenges related to implementation, such as the need for standardisation and interoperability. The paper concludes by offering recommendations for the adoption and implementation of BCT in the food industry and identifying opportunities for further research. The findings of this study have implications for policymakers, food safety regulators, and food industry stakeholders who seek to improve food safety and quality through the adoption of innovative technologies.
