Abstract
This chapter focuses on the experiences of elderly populations relocated to Colombo, Sri Lanka. Using the “age-friendly housing” framework, the authors examine changes encountered by the elderly after being resettled in the “Sahaspura” housing scheme. Employing a mixed-method research design, the study combines qualitative and quantitative data to explore the extent of age-friendly considerations in urban resettlement planning and how the elderly perceive their new living conditions. Data from the second wave of a longitudinal survey conducted in 2015, along with in-depth interviews with selected household heads aged 60 years and older, form the basis of the study. Findings reveal that some age-friendly features such as affordability, access to services, and design are achieved in these projects. However, further attention is needed in areas such as safety, community environment, design, and maintenance. This chapter provides valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities of creating age-friendly housing and living environments for elderly populations in urban resettlement schemes. It underscores the significance of prioritizing the well-being and needs of the elderly in the planning and implementation of urban development projects.
