Rethinking Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Cochin City: Ignored and Concealed

Forced Migration and Urban Transformation in South Asia

Abstract

This chapter examines the rapidly changing urban landscape of Kochi, India, driven by the influx of new domestic and foreign capital. While major development projects contribute to regional development, they have also led to the displacement of the urban poor residing on the fringes of metropolitan Kochi. Additionally, these projects have disregarded the environmental impact, particularly the conversion and construction of paddy fields and wetlands in the area. The chapter focuses on displaced individuals embroiled in the process of rebuilding their lives and the host communities where they have been resettled. By investigating the effects of displacement on the livelihoods, social networks, and economic opportunities of displaced individuals, the chapter delves into their coping strategies. Furthermore, it sheds light on the experiences of displacement due to development projects and the resulting conflicts, utilizing data from longitudinal surveys conducted in Kochi. Overall, this chapter contributes valuable insights into the complex dynamics of urban development and its impact on the lives of the urban poor in Kochi, India.
