Abstract
In this Chapter, a survey of selected Ibibio songs is carried out to examine the significance of indigenous music in the cultural heritage of the Ibibio (New Benue-Congo) people. By focusing on the extent to which musical recreation forms an integral aspect of lifestyle in traditional Ibibio, the meaning, symbols and relevance of songs in the Ibibio culture are contextualised. Data for the study were generated primarily through structured interviews comprising ten (10) purposively sampled informants. The analysis considered the way social relations and institutions are integral to Ibibio music. The major findings of the study indicate that indigenous music convey messages of beliefs, values, and other fundamental philosophies of Ibibio people and heritage. The study recommends that traditional music genres should be encouraged, documented and preserved for sustainability and posterity.
