Abstract

Certified reference materials are required to ensure the quality and metrological traceability of products, validate the test methods/procedures and calibration of analytical instruments (Zakaria and Rezali 2014). Indian institutes/industries/R&D Sectors/accredited labs, etc., are procuring several reference materials for quality assurance. Due to the non-availability of indigenous reference materials, it is not easy to establish the quality of the procured product. The developed nations have their regulations and programs to procure quality products (Trienekens and Zuurbier 2008). The use of certified reference material can establish the quality of the procured product through validation of procedures and calibration of measuring equipment (Guide 2009). The stability, homogeneity and traceability of measurement ensure the quality of the reference material (Bunk 2007). The shelf-life of reference material is also an essential factor, as sometimes it expires even before usage because of low shelf-life, thereby creating an extra burden on users (Pauwels et al. 1998). Procuring from abroad is tedious; extra resources are involved, and the expiry time starts from the time it is dispatched. The transit time is also counted as a lifetime. To cater to the need of institutes/industries/R&D labs/accredited laboratories and avoid procurement, CSIR-NPL has taken the initiative to develop the certified reference materials (Bharatiya Nirdeshak Dravya: BND®) in-house and in collaboration with Reference Material Producers who are accredited as per ISO 17034: 2016.
