Abstract

Recently, as the power industry is revolutionizing, the smart grid concept is gaining momentum continuously around the world. For real-time supervision, protection, and control of the behavior of the power grid, phasor measurement units (PMUs) are being installed at a large scale. This chapter presents in detail the electrical power system, the structure of the Indian power grid, synchrophasor technology, wide area monitoring system (WAMS), PMUs in monitoring, and control of the power grid. Also, the Unified Real Time Dynamic State Measurement (URTDSM) project, which is being implemented in the Indian Power System, is elucidated, along with the details of PMU and the role of synchronization techniques in PMU. The IEEE synchrophasor standards associated with the measurements, compliance, and testing and the PMU calibration system of the CSIR-NPL, along with its traceability to the country’s national standards, are dealt with in detail. The chapter finally ends by highlighting the implementation issues and challenges faced by the power grid and their solutions, such as load management and automation of the grid, which are essential to transform and augment the power sector into a responsive, stable, and secure system.
