Abstract

The San Francisco Treaty was followed by the Japan–U.S., Security Treaty signed on the same day. It marked Japanese engagement in the Western Bloc in the Cold War order. The Japan–U.S., Security Treaty was the driving force to ensure the San Francisco system. The most natural reaction from Japan seemed to be the decision to ensure the right of self-defence and to seek a more active role in the regional defence.
