Abstract

Neuromodulation describes a technique that stimulates an isolated intact motor neuron system to drive the function it was intended for, e.g., electrical stimulation of the anterior sacral roots to evoke bladder contractions (sacral neuromodulation, SNM). Neuromodulation, on the other hand, is any action that changes or modulates pre-existing neural activity to influence the physiological behavior of an organ. In this chapter, the definition, indications, surgical technique, and results in neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction for SNM are described.
