Abstract
The power of the National Religious Party (NRP) and the Labor party has been waning during the same era. The party which stood at the wheel of Israeli governments, sharing power from its inception with its senior partner the Labor party, now finds itself disappearing from the political map. The two parties have cooperated since the pre-state era for over 40 years, an alliance that ended in 1977 with the rise to power of Likud. Henceforth, the NRP became a perpetual political ally of the right-wing. While the influence in the society of Religious Zionism, the political base of the NRP, rose, the strength of the religious party declined. In this chapter, while displaying the role of the NRP in the political history of Israeli democracy, we explain this conundrum.
