Abstract

The Bruat case (1877) is an example of illegal land appropriation that benefitted a French official in colonial Algeria. If it went unnoticed on both sides of the Mediterranean, the silence was not absolute in the documents and is an interesting issue to resolve from a global perspective. As a contextualised practice, the favour took place in a time marked by the French trauma of 1871, a revenge spirit against Algerian “rebels” and a growing appetite for new land-grabbing. In those times, the question of corruption could not be discussed, except to associate the “native” with a certain frame of mind to do evil. Dispossessed families knew they had to take this into account in order to save a minimum of their assets. In their claims formulated by public writers, they could turn the “corruption of blood” argument against French authorities, although it would take time before catching any attention.
