Abstract
The recent lifestyle and technology changes, sustainability has become a crucial concept in strategic urban planning and management. Sustainability requires us to consider using and managing resources in a manner that does not endanger our lives and the needs of future generations. Sustainable urban development raises awareness on the resource needs for residential, industrial, transportation, commercial or recreational purposes, specifically in the use of natural resources in smart cities. Therefore, a managed-smart city within thoughtful urban planning diminishes energy dependency, enhance efficiency and reliability, indicate environmental impacts, and ensures sustainability. This paper focuses on identifying strategies for smart and sustainable design in two neighboring townships in Kabul, Afghanistan: the Bibi Mahro hillside (informal settlement) and the 3rd Macrorayan area (formal settlement residential buildings). A systematic literature review was designed to define the terms smart city and sustainability and to investigate strategies for integrating formal and informal settlements. A viable strategy offers efficient-energy production and conservation, water management, transportation, wastewater utilization, and cost-effective application of smart features. These features maintain social integration among neighborhoods and minimize the environmental impact of carbon footprint of energy usage.
