Clinical Education for the Health Professions

Abstract

Anesthesiologists and engineers began developing and adopting SBE in the late 1960s to meet recognized training needs in their discipline. In medicine, as the clinical environment became more restrictive and health professions learners were asked to stop practicing on live patients, simulation-based education (SBE) was adopted as a logical second-best choice for many learning experiences. It did not take long to realize that SBE provided some unique opportunities that traditional clinical could not. The traditional clinical environment could never provide standardization of patient experiences that can be designed and provided in the SBE environment. Additionally, SBE provides opportunities for assessment that would never exist in a hospital or clinic setting. Essentially, SBE can offer the opportunity to practice and evaluate clinical and communication skills in a safe forgiving area, away from real patients.
