Abstract
Purusottam Bhattacharya argues that the UK’s relationship with the European Union (EU) has always been problematic—prior to its entry into the EU in 1973 as well as during its 43-year membership. However, the process of its disengagement from the EU, post-June 2016, is technically so complex that the negotiations have assumed polemical overtones. A botched snap election gamble by Theresa May has added to the confusion. Due to changing political dynamics, the nature of the wholesale restructuring of the UK’s relationship with the EU and its potential repercussions on the India–UK and India–EU relationships is currently hard to predict.
