Abstract
Gulshan Sachdeva shows that, historically, Europe has been important for India, both for trade and investment. Even today, the core of the India–EU strategic partnership is still economics. The EU is India’s biggest trade and investment partner. Europe has emerged as an important destination for cross-border investments and overseas acquisitions for Indian companies. These trends led to negotiations for a Broad-Based Trade and Investment Agreement, which began in 2007. Since 2013, negotiations have been suspended and no major breakthrough has been achieved in recent bilateral summits. With Brexit uncertainty, as well as economic and political difficulties in Europe and India, Sachdeva makes a realistic assessment of the possibility for a trade and investment agreement in the next few years.
