Abstract
This chapter describes the vision of Tufts University to educate students in all disciplines to be “active citizens,” people with the values and skills to be leaders for positive change in society, and the comprehensive approach it is using to achieve that end. The account describes the process of developing this ambitious, university-wide initiative. Then it describes core programs in the areas of student leadership development , faculty support and capacity-building, research, community partnerships, and institutional social responsibility. It discusses facilitating factors and challenges encountered, and how they have been managed. A concluding section reflects on future issues and opportunities. The chapter emphasizes distinctive features of Tufts’ vision and strategy: its determination to reach all students and professors in all disciplines, collective leadership by all stakeholders, and a horizontal organizational structure.
