The Emergence of Japan on the Global Stage, 1895–1908

The History of US-Japan Relations

Abstract

Victory in the Spanish–American War in 1898 saw the US begin to take a prominent role on the stage of world politics. When Japan later established itself as the only imperial nation in Asia and entered the ranks of the great world powers following its success in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, the two nations began to recognize each other as potential threats. Chapter 2 traces the events up until this period, interspersing analysis of the status quo in the Far East and Pacific region and the development of US policies toward East Asia at the turn of the century.
