Abstract
This chapter is devoted to introducing fundamental properties of optical fibers and related measurement techniques. The basics are firstly introduced to give a clear working principle of an optical fiber as a light waveguide. Then the definitions of the related parameters are described, which include acceptance angle, numerical aperture, refractive index, cut-off wavelength, mode field diameter, spot size etc. For measurement of these parameters, the common optical components, instruments, as well as fiber handling are briefed. Then, the measurement techniques are presented along with the geometry specification of optical fibers. Each of the introduced measurement technique will be provided with a practical example for a better understanding.
