Abstract

The primary intention of this International Handbook is to advance our understanding of the substantive theoretical and methodological debates that underpin and inform the history of education as a field of knowledge through critique, reflection, and professional discourse. As a Major Reference Work, the challenges and opportunities are not dissimilar to those identified in comparable works that present an historiographical mapping of the field (Bagchi et al. 2014; Furlong and Lawn 2011; Lowe 2000; McCulloch 2005; McCulloch and Crook 2013). That is, if the field is to continue to flourish and deliver on its promises, debates about its methods, questions, and theoretical considerations are imperative. In that sense, this International History is a contribution to the intellectual history of the field.
