Riassunto
La cura del paziente affetto da sclerosi multipla (SM) nella sua complessa globalità richiede la considerazione della presenza di eventuali disturbi cognitivi da un lato e di un preponderante disagio emotivo riferibile sia ai deficit cognitivi stessi sia all’esistenza di malattia, dall’altro. Al fine di occuparsi dell’intero sistema-paziente, inteso corne continuum mente-corpo, diventa perciò fondamentale prendersi cura al contempo del funzionamento dei processi cognitivi e degli aspetti emotivo-affettivi della persona attraverso specifici percorsi terapeutici. Questo modello di lavoro, che determina una presa in carico necessariamente multidisciplinare della persona, permette al paziente di percepire un maggiore senso di sicurezza e di sperimentare il riconoscimento di una molteplicità di aspetti contemporaneamente coinvolti nella sua condizione di malato. A partire dal riconoscimento, dalla comprensione e dalla legittimazione delle possibili limitazioni e disagi — siano essi motori o di ordine psicologico — può nascere una migliore predisposizione a modifiche funzionali. Questo processo appare fondamentale per favorire la ricostruzione di un’immagine integrata di sé che può dare un significato a ciò che sta accadendo.
