Child Safety, Welfare and Well-being

Abstract

The present article throws light upon the scenario of child labor in India, a serious and enormously complex social issue of the country. Specifying the official statistics about the prevalence of the problem in the Indian society, it argues how working children are denied of their basic rights of survival, development, protection, and participation. The article presents the industry-specific examples where children are forced to take up exploitative jobs in which they work in difficult and hazardous conditions and are usually underpaid. The adverse impact of working in harsh conditions on the mental, physical, social, and emotional health of children are described with special emphasis on the ailments faced by a girl child involved in bondage and slavery. The article concludes with suggestions that Indian government must strictly enforce legislative provisions to eradicate the root cause of the problem. It is only then these children, who are the greatest gift to humanity, can lead the future development of the society.
