Abstract
Despite the significant reduction of fatalities due to the quantum leaps in occupant protection (Figure 9.1), every day, approx. 3500 people die in traffic accidents worldwide, resulting in more than 1.3 Mio fatalities per year, and 20 to 50 Mio people sustain severe injuries. Motor vehicle crashes rank # 9 as cause of death, and due to the worldwide increasing motorization, rank # 5 is expected by 2020.
