Bild I-1 stellt den Aufgabenbereich der Signal- und Systemtheorie dar. Ein Eingangssignal, das entweder als Funktion der Zeit (s 1(t)) oder als Funktion der Frequenz (S 1(f), F 1(s), S 1(z)) gegeben ist, erfährt durch ein System, dessen Eigenschaften durch h(t) bzw. H(f), H(s) oder H(z) gekennzeichnet werden, eine Beeinflussung und erscheint als geändertes Ausgangssignal s 2(t) bzw. S 2(f), F 2(s) oder S 2(z). Die Signalund Systemtheorie erfasst in einem ersten Schritt die Zusammenhänge zwischen den eingezeichneten Größen.
