Zusammenfassung
Nach der Definition der „International Association for the Study of Pain“ ist Schmerz ein unangenehmes Sinnes- und Gefühlserlebnis (Schmidt, Struppler 1982). Schmerz ist somit eine komplexe Sinneswahrnehmung, welche zahlreichen Einflüssen unterliegt. Das Schmerzempfinden bei akuten Schmerzzuständen unterscheidet sich wesentlich vom Schmerzerleben bei chronischem Schmerz. Bei der Beurteilung sollte neben der Schmerzintensität auch die Schmerzqualität erfasst werden. Bei anhaltenden Schmerzzuständen ist die emotionale Färbung und kognitive Bewertung und erlebte Behinderung mit zu berücksichtigen. Für die Schmerzbeurteilung kann insbesondere bei Kindern und im Alter das Erfassen des Schmerzverhaltens hilfreich sein.
