Zusammenfassung
Kleists kleine Schriften aus dem Jahr 1809 stehen im Zeichen politischer Affekte und Leidenschaften. Der Leistungsfähigkeit der französischen Armee, in der Freiwillige begeistert für die Nation kämpften, und der Führungsstärke Napoleons – nach Carl von Clausewitz der »Kriegsgott selbst« – hatten die alten Mächte Europas lange Zeit wenig entgegenzusetzen. Das Heilige Römische Reich deutscher Nation war zum Zeitpunkt der Abfassung längst aufgelöst und formaljuristisch abgewickelt. Im Westen waren von Napoleon geschaffene Fürstentümer und ihr Zusammenschluss im Rheinbund entstanden. Österreich sah sich nach mehreren Koalitionskriegen auf seine Grenzen verwiesen.
