Abstract

After the discovery of the basic principle in 1917, lasers are now used in many applications, but it took some time until the first clinical applications found their way into dermatology. The special properties of laser light allow a wide range of applications from ablation, coagulation, and selective photothermolysis to the combination of fractional lasers and other light sources that offer new therapies for the treatment of field cancerization and chronically photo-aged skin. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has thus experienced a new upswing in its further development as daylight PDT, laser-assisted PDT, and laser-assisted artificial daylight PDT. Due to its oxidative effect, antimicrobial PDT is probably just as promising for the future, regardless of the antibiotic resistance pattern or the type of bacteria.
