Zusammenfassung
Ein Verband gleichartiger Zellen wird als Gewebe bezeichnet. Die Gleichartigkeit bezieht sich in erster Linie auf das Aussehen der Zellen, aber auch auf ihre physiologischen Leistungen. Gewebe sind also primär morphologische Einheiten, die zusammenwirken, um bestimmte Funktionen zu erfüllen. Die so gebildeten funktionellen Einheiten werden als Organe bezeichnet; diese sind demnach nicht nur aus mehreren Zellen, sondern häufig auch aus mehreren Geweben aufgebaut. Während sich die Cytologie mit der Struktur von Lebensformen auf der Ebene der Zellen befasst, wird das Studium der Gewebe als Histologie (griech. histós, Gewebe) bezeichnet. Da beide Ebenen der Organisation jedoch eng miteinander verbunden sind, verliert die früher streng gehandhabte Abgrenzung von Cytologie und Histologie immer mehr an Bedeutung.
