Ganze Zahlen braucht man zum Zählen, Brüche zum Teilen: Wenn fünf Kinder von ihrem Taschengeld ein Kuchenstück kaufen wollen, das 2 Euro kostet, dann trifft es auf jedes Kind \( \frac{2}{5} \) Euro, oder 0,40 Cent. Wenn es nur drei Kinder sind, dann bekommt jedes Kind mehr, aber es muss auch mehr bezahlen, genau genommen \( \frac{2}{3} \) Euro. Allerdings führt das auf eine Schwierigkeit: Als Dezimalbruch geschrieben, wäre \( \frac{2}{3} = 0,\overline{6} \) (d.h. sechs periodisch), und \( 0,\overline{6} \) Euro gibt es nicht.
