Zusammenfassung
Das Auge hat keine rein sphärische Gestalt, weil der Krümmungsradius der Hornhaut (8 mm) geringer als derjenige der Sklera (12 mm) ist. Damit lässt sich die Form des Auges als oblates Sphäroid beschreiben. Der normale antero-posteriore Durchmesser des Auges beträgt 23–25 mm, wobei myope Augen zu einer längeren, hyperope Augen zu einer kürzeren Achsenlänge tendieren. Der durchschnittliche Querdurchmesser des Augapfels beträgt 24 mm. Er ist von der Tenon-Kapsel und in seinem vorderen Anteil außerdem von der Bindehaut bedeckt.
Das Auge lässt sich in drei Abschnitte, die Vorderkammer, die Hinterkammer und den Glaskörperraum, einteilen (Abb. 2.1).

Die Vorderkammer, der Raum zwischen der Iris und der Kornea, ist mit Kammerwasser gefüllt.

Der Raum hinter der Iris und dem Ziliarkörper und vor der Linse und der vorderen Begrenzung des Glaskörpers wird als Hinterkammer bezeichnet. Sie ist kleiner als die Vorderkammer und ebenfalls mit Kammerwasser gefüllt.

Das größte Kompartiment des Auges ist der Glaskörperraum, der mehr als zwei Drittel des Augenvolumens (5–6 ml) einnimmt und den gelförmigen Glaskörper enthält. Das Gesamtvolumen des erwachsenen Auges ist annähernd 6,5–7 ml 1 .
Die Wand des Bulbus ist aus drei konzentrischen Schichten aufgebaut. Die äußerste Schicht besteht aus der durchsichtigen Kornea im vorderen Teil und der undurchsichtigen weißen Sklera im hinteren Anteil. Diese äußere Schicht ist fest und widerstandsfähig und trägt außerdem zur Brechkraft des Auges bei.
