Zusammenfassung
Lebende Organismen sind aus Zellen zusammengesetzt. Im einfachsten Falle (Einzeller) besteht der gesamte Organismus aus nur einer Zelle, die überwiegende Zahl von Organismen wird jedoch aus zahlreichen unterschiedlichen Zellen (Mehrzeller) gebildet, die in verschiedenen Geweben und Organen organisiert sind und sehr unterschiedliche Formen und Funktionen haben. Zellen stellen die kleinste mögliche Einheit des Lebens dar, unterhalb dieser Ebene existiert kein Leben. Während der Evolution haben sich zwei grundlegende Zelltypen herausgebildet, die prokaryontische Zelle und die eukaryontische Zelle. Prokaryonten sind einfacher aufgebaut und häufig Einzeller; zu ihnen gehören die Bakterien und die Blaualgen. Eukaryonten zeigen einen wesentlich komplexeren Aufbau mit Zellkern (Karyon) und Zellkompartimenten. Alle Pflanzen und Tiere sowie die Pilze gehören zu den Eukaryonten. Eukaryonten sind während der Evolution vermutlich aus Prokaryonten hervorgegangen und haben ursprünglich symbiotisch lebende Prokaryonten dauerhaft in ihre Struktur integriert, und zwar in Form von Mitochondrien und Chloroplasten (Endosymbiontentheorie). Da die meisten biochemischen Vorgänge im Inneren von Zellen ablaufen, ist eine genaue Kenntnis zellulärer Strukturen und Funktionen unabdingbar für das Verständnis dieser Prozesse. Zahlreiche Erkrankungen lassen sich als eine Funktionsstörung zellulärer Strukturen erklären.
