Zusammenfassung
Die Thoraxwand bildet einen geschützten Raum (Cavum thoracis) für Herz, Lungen und weitere mediastinale Strukturen und ist gleichzeitig funktionell eingebunden in die Atmung unter Beteiligung von Diaphragma und Brustwandmuskulatur. Dieser Raum wird vorne vom Brustbein und den Rippenknorpeln, seitlich und hinten von den Rippen und der Wirbelsäule begrenzt.
